The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)

The Reaping: when two of each District’s teenagers become Tributes in the Hunger Games. Survival is victory and only one Tribute can survive. Katniss Endgreen volunteers as a Tribute to save her gentle sister from the games. Katniss is tough but none of her District’s Tributes has won in decades. Matters become complicated when District 12’s other Tribute is one she has a complicated past with. Can Katniss survive the Hunger Games?

The Hunger Games is physically and philosophically suspenseful. The reader wonders if Katniss can survive without becoming someone she’d despise. Katniss gets attention by being a mixture of practical, tough, loyal and conflicted. Starvation and the ruling Capital’s hard line on rebellion show a violent class-based world. The Hunger Games could be a match for those looking for a tale of survival, philosophical suspense, a violent class-based world and/or romance.
